A Sermon on Creation
Key Text: Rev. 4:11
Introduction
Have you ever heard people remark about something so outstanding? Something such as a car or house. Usually, the next thing is they want to know the owner. Once they do, there is a tendence to treat that person with a level of difference, based on what they possess. In the same way, when we look at the beauty of the world around us, we are left in awe. We transition from admiration of the created to adoration of the Creator, the One who made it all possible. Contemplation of the world around us is window through which we can be ushered into the presence of the Almighty. On the contrary, entertaining theories of origins that exclude God as the Creator of the world could lead to many complications.
DISCUSSION
- The heavens declare the glory of God (Ps. 19:1-4)
- Who has measured the waters in his hand? (Isa. 40:12)
- Who instructed me? (Isa. 40:13-14)
- Look up, who created all these? (Isa. 26:26)
- God’s invisible qualities are made visible in His creation (Rom. 1:18-20)
Folly
- A fool has said in his heart there’s no God (Ps. 14:1-3; 53:1-4)
- Professing to be wise, they became fools (Rom. 1:21ff)
- Denying God’s creatorship through suppression of the truth leads to:
- Idolatry
- Sexual impurity
- Homosexuality
- Depraved minds
- Disobedience
- Senselessness
- Heartlessness
- Insolence
- Hatred of God
- Murders
- Arrogance, etc.
- The fact of God’s creatorship is a cornerstone that should never be discarded.
- Is it any wonder that God gave the Sabbath as an eternal memorial of this important fact of His creatorship? (Gen. 1:31-2:3; cf. Exod. 20:8-11).
APPEAL
- Having contemplated the beauty, vastness, majesty, intricacies and sophistry of God’s creation, we are compelled to look beyond the created to the Creator.
- In so doing, God says, “come let us bow, let us kneel before the Lord God our Maker,” (Ps. 95:1-6).
- What does the natural world around us mean to you?
- Is it your desire to have the hand that guides the stars in their courses above also be the one who guides your life?
Prayer: Dear Lord, may I have eyes that see your majesty and power in the things that you created. May the work of your hands in the heavens above, in all the earth and in the waters below, point me to your love, care and power. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
