Wrong Turn!

A Sermon on the Fall of Man

Key Text: Isa. 1:18

 

Introduction

  • Have you ever missed a turn while driving or even walking?
  • How long did it take you to realize what had happened and what were the consequences?
  • I recall a time my wife and I took a wrong turn while driving in one of Zimbabwe’s national Parks.
  • The road we took was in a terrible condition. We got stuck and we slept in the car. Frightened!
  • Our first parents took a wrong turn in Eden, and we haven’t yet recovered from the consequences of their error in judgment.

 

Discussion

  • What happened?
  • God had prepared a garden for them. Perfect place (Gen. 2:8)
  • Unfortunately, Adam and Eve focused more on what they thought they did not have (Gen. 3:1-6)
  • Defied God’s clear instruction – chose independence from Him
  • Rejection of God’s plan for them
  • They took a wrong turn
  • What were the consequences?
  • Shame (3:7); Fear (3:8); Hiding from God; pain (3:16); suffering; death (3:17-19)
  • Adam bore sons in his image (Gen. 5:1-3)
  • The Hope
  • 3:15
  • The pattern
  • Help was on the way
  • Have you taken a wrong turn in your life? What have been the consequences?
  • The people of Judah took a wrong turn somewhere in the course of their history
  • Prophet Isaiah described them as sick from head to toe (Isa. 1:4ff)
  • Nevertheless, God in His mercy, extends an invitation to them (Isa. 1:18-20)
  • No matter what wrong turn you may have taken in your life, God invites your and I to confess, repent and be saved (1 John 1:8 – 2:2).
  • In Jesus Christ, the whole world is given the only way to be saved from the fall that came through Adam and Eve (John 3:16; Acts 4:12)

 

Appeal

  • Confess your sins to God without seeking to blame others or minimize them through rationalizations and comparisons with other people’s.
  • When God has forgiven you, accept His forgiveness
  • Extend God’s forgiveness to people who have hurt you in your life and forgive yourself also.

 

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for your forgiveness of my sins through Christ Jesus my Lord and Saviour. Help to turn away from my darling sins so I can live with you eternally. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
